LABOR (SYDNEY)
Labor's national conference is set to endorse the sale of uranium to India, before
wrapping up today.
Prime Minister JULIA GILLARD is pushing for the party to overturn its long-held ban
on Australian uranium exports to India, arguing there's now sufficient checks in place
to ensure it's not used for nuclear weapons.
But some of the 400 delegates, including frontbencher PETER GARRETT, will argue against
the party platform change, saying no sales should go ahead until India signs the nuclear
non-proliferation treaty.
The conference will also debate aged care and health reform, national security and
defence issues.
Yesterday, delegates endorsed a move to give Labor parliamentarians a conscience vote
on same-sex marriage.
The Labor Party has also backed a boost to the nation's refugee intake while maintaining
a controversial plan to process asylum seekers offshore under a deal with Malaysia.
But refugee groups have rejected the ALP's stance on processing asylum seekers offshore,
with IAN RINTOUL from the Refugee Action Coalition saying it's a shabby piece of domestic
politicking.

NSW: Father stunned son's killer walks free
SYDNEY, Dec 18 AAP - The father of a 14-year-old boy shot dead at a sleepover says
he can't understand why his son's killer has been allowed to walk free from a Sydney court.
Josef Cruickshank, 14, was shot during a sleepover at a rural property in Orangeville,
southwest of Sydney, on December 7 last year.
His now 15-year-old friend, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with
his murder but later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.
The teenager was released on a four-year good behaviour bond in Campbelltown District
Court on Friday.
Judge Martin Sides said the boy had expressed "genuine remorse" and the incident had
had a "substantial impact on him".
Outside court, the victim's father, Josef Cruickshank (Josef Cruickshank), said he
was disappointed by the decision.
"I don't understand the law. It's ridiculous," he told reporters.
"At the end of the day, if they were such good mates, why do we not know anything about
how my son died. We know he was shot and nothing else.
"His family has told us nothing. This family can move on and they can get help, what
help did Josef get?"
The victim's mother, who is estranged from Mr Cruickshank, had previously called for
all charges against the boy to be dropped.

Fed: Govt should take over primary care: report
Eds: changes master keyword from Hospitals
Eds: Embargoed until 1230 (AEDT) Monday, February 16.
By Melissa Jenkins
CANBERRA, Feb 16 AAP - The federal government's health reform body has called for a
commonwealth takeover of primary care but stopped short of recommending the same step
for hospitals.
The National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission, charged a year ago with delivering
a blueprint to overhaul the healthcare system, released its interim report to the Rudd
government on Monday.
The federal government has threatened to hold a referendum on whether or not Canberra
should assume control of public hospitals if the states don't lift their game by the middle
of the year.
But it has not made clear exactly what the trigger point is for such action.
The commission's key recommendation is that the federal government assume total responsibility
for primary care, that is health care provided outside the hospital system.
But it stopped short of recommending similar action for the hospital system, only raising
it as an option.
A major advantage of a federal takeover of the nation's hospitals would be that it
would resolve the `blame game' by making one government squarely accountable for all aspects
of health care.
But such a significant change would also involve major risks, including a lack of accountability
to voters, the commission says in its report.
"(This) option ... potentially weakens community and electoral accountability and responsiveness
by having only the national level of government involved in health and health care," the
report said.
"Arguably, state and territory governments are more responsive to the views of their
electorate than a national government that has to balance the interests of Perth or Launceston
against those of Sydney or the Gold Coast."
A new tension between regional health authorities and the federal government about
funding adequacy would arise if the commonwealth took over hospitals, the commission says.
It has also suggested the federal government consider allowing accommodation bonds
to be paid for high-care places in nursing homes.
The Rudd government has repeatedly ruled out permitting accommodation bonds for high-care places.
Other key recommendations contained in the A Healthier Future for All Australians report include:
- A regular report be produced that tracks Australia's progress as a nation in tackling
health inequity;
- A scheme be developed for universal access to preventative and restorative dental
care and dentures, regardless of a person's ability to pay;
- Delivery of wellness and health promotion programs by employers and private health insurers;
- Establishment of a national health promotion and prevention agency to be responsible
for leadership on 10-year health goals;
- Performance payments for prevention and quality care;
- Development of a electronic personal health record system;
- A share of commonwealth hospital funding to the states to be tied to meeting or improving
progress performance targets, payable as a bonus;
- A youth-friendly community-based service to provide information on sexual health
and mental disorders to be rolled out nationally;
- Greater investment in mental health training for the primary care workforce with
the training to be part of accreditation processes.
The commission will provide its final report to the government at the end of the year.

Fed: Interesting time for German film, says Heike Makatsch
By Jonathon Moran, National Entertainment Writer
SYDNEY, April 20 AAP - German actor Heike Makatsch has enjoyed some international success,
with roles in films like Love Actually, but she's keen to keep working in her home country.
The actor, who once dated new James Bond star Daniel Craig, says it is an interesting
time for German cinema and she wants to be part of it.
"The bottom line of it is that in Germany I have got more chance to really get parts
that are more ambitious than I could in international films," said Makatsch, in Sydney
for the Goethe Institute 2006 German Film Festival.
"If something comes along, that will be great and if it doesn't, I would hope that
I could shape German film a little bit and have some sort of influence there."
Makatsch has more than 30 film credits to her name, three of which will screen at the
German Film Festival this month.
They are Almost Heaven, No Songs of Love and Against All Odds.
Makatsch, 35, is one of Germany's biggest film stars, but she plays down her stardom.
"It is always relative," she said.
"Yes, I am quite busy. But it is like when you have some sort of idea what you want
to do, or what films you want to do, there aren't so many around suddenly."
And unlike film stars in the UK or America, Makatsch insists that paparazzi is not
a problem in Germany.
"There are some stars that maybe attract that kind of attention but if you don't want
it, you won't get it," she said.
"I can go shopping and some people might take a second glance but it is not something
that I really notice or that would hinder me."
Makatsch got her acting break after hosting a German music show called Bravo.
She then went on to host her own show, Heike Makatsch - Die Show, where she was noticed
for her first film role, Maennerpension (Jailbirds).
"It is quite a good time for German film at the moment," she said passionately.
"Somehow, something has freed itself when it comes to how film makers express themselves.
I feel anything is possible at the moment.
"Those films that do make it into the cinema in the end are all very interesting and German."
The German Film Festival will open in Sydney on April 20, running through to April 30.
Concurrent festivals will also be held in Melbourne, Canberra, and Brisbane.

Thomson Joins Leading Broadband Industry Players to Create a Common Vision to Drive Online Entertainment Service Delivery.
Business Editors/High-Tech Writers
CANNES, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 26, 2003
Issues a Call to Action to the Content, Consumer Electronics and
Telecoms Industry to Seize the Mass-Market Opportunity
A group comprised of the world's major broadband DSL industry service providers, consumer electronics and solutions vendors announced their intention to develop, standardize and support an open model for interactive entertainment services over broadband DSL.
The group is comprised of the following companies: Alcatel (Paris:CGEP.PA)(NYSE:ALA), Belgacom, Philips Consumer Electronics, Bluewin/Swisscom, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telekom Austria and Thomson (Euronext Paris:18453)(NYSE:TMS).
With the number of worldwide broadband subscribers expected to reach 150 million by 2005, broadband is rapidly becoming a mass market and a lucrative distribution mechanism for online content and services.
Alan Pyne, director at Schema, Europe's leading independent management consultancy in the technology and media markets, says: "The provision for online content such as movies, games and music is now a major requirement for broadband's 36 million subscribers. This presents a huge opportunity for the content, consumer electronics and telecoms industries, which we believe all benefit from the development of open standards."
To realize this significant market opportunity, the offering for broadband entertainment services would benefit from developing a common approach to the business and technical enablers between the major players in the service delivery chain.
Currently, the initiating group is developing a set of proposals to describe a model for the provision of broadband entertainment services in a profitable manner for every implied stakeholder.
The group will garner additional input and support from other broadband stakeholders including the content industries with a view to collectively submitting a proposal to the appropriate standards bodies later in 2003.

Entrepreneur Fills Niche with Hawthorne, N.J.-Based Internet Companies.
By Lauren Coleman-Lochner, The Record, Hackensack, N.J. Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News
Oct. 7--A guy in his 20s decides to start an Internet company. It's the Nineties. It's the thing to do. He gets two brothers to invest, and waits for the business to come.
It doesn't.
But the funny thing is, three years later, Steve Blood is still running an Internet business -- four, in fact. The collection of small companies, based in Hawthorne, prints and sells T-shirts and other apparel.
And another funny thing: These aren't the same businesses he started with. He tried about eight different things, and four took. Such is the ever-fluid world of the Internet.
Plan A called for a real estate listings Web site, launched in late 1997. With business sparse, the fledging cybergroup paid its bills by designing Web sites. That was serendipitous, too -- Blood, 29, found his first Web site designer at Kinko's, copying his resume.
Still, Blood says, "we had more time on our hands than we had work to do."
Blood and colleagues, of course, jumped into a torrent of Internet activity, when anyone who could form a start-up did. Now that's dried to a trickle, and many companies that once thought they would rule the world are dead or gasping for breath.
With little paid work, the handful of employees became philanthropists, says John Lefkowitz, the president of Punctuate, which prints T-shirts. They concocted sites for fire departments, chambers of commerce, anyone who asked and could get their name out there.
"You name it, we were doing it for no money," says Leftkowitz, who came on board through mutual friends from Ridgewood High School. "We were just trying to get our feet wet. Any work is good work when there's no work."
In November 1998, the team started Copyleft, which sells tech-related apparel.
It donates a portion of sales to organizations that support open-source software (which allows programmers to read, modify, and redistribute coding). Its Web site notes that it has given almost $100,000 in donations to various often-source promoters.
Copyleft's business took off quickly, so it needed a reliable local printing company to make the shirts. Most silk-screeners, Lefkowitz says, were either too large to bother with them or too small to handle orders.
When it couldn't find a suitable partner, Copyleft created Punctuate.
Now, Punctuate, in addition to making T-shirts for Copyleft, prints shirts for companies and organizations. Unlike Copyleft, it does not yet operate a Web site, although it is preparing to launch one.
Copyleft had $750,000 in revenues last year. Punctuate, which has about a dozen customers, had $400,000.
Like many companies, it is revising its estimates for what lies ahead. Punctuate is off $20,000 in revenue since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Blood says, and couldn't make its payroll last week.
Without the deep pockets of larger companies, such a falloff can be devastating, he says.
Despite an uncertain outlook, he says, he is "not going anywhere."
Another of Blood's Web sites, Goatgear.com, based in New York City (and founded by friends in 1997) could be the biggest of all, he says. It sells urban wear, and expects $350,000 to $500,000 in revenues this year.
The newest company, Lax.com, for lacrosse fans, was started in January 2000 and had about $500,000 in sales in its first year.
The operations aren't strictly online: Goatgear operates a Manhattan showroom, and Lax has a store in Ridgewood (Laxshop), with another scheduled to open Nov. 1 in Boonton.
Blood family members have invested about $1 million in these enterprises -- plus room and board.
"I've never drawn a salary. I still live with my parents," says Blood, who studied art at Williams College before plunging into the Internet world.
The companies do no advertising or catalogs, Blood says, but word is spreading -- about a quarter of the orders come from overseas.
And, he adds, many of his competitors spent millions and millions of dollars and are now out of business.
But by keeping a tight rein on spending, and by finding unusual niches, they have been able to prosper as others failed.
"If only," Blood says, "we hadn't wasted so much money being a design firm."

Interspersed throughout almost constant turkey gobbling, Gobble This! will also feature humorous -- and not so humorous -- vintage turkey related audio clips, providing a "rich and robust, and highly satisfying, audio feast," chirped Van Huysse.
"We're the proud sponsor of the Spinner.com Gobble This! channel," said Bob Fallon, director of marketing services for Ocean Spray. "Spinner.com plays something for everyone, and now they've got the perfect accompaniment to Ocean Spray's tart and tasty cranberry. He told local daily Annahar there was a large surplus due to the non-compliance of several OPEC members with previous cuts and that the economic slowdown would keep demand down.

44TH EDUCATION LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE AT IU SCHOOL OF EDUCATION FEATURES FREE PUBLIC EVENTS.(Conference news)
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The following information was released by Indiana University - Bloomington:
The public is invited for two panel discussions regarding changing K-12 education policies and laws as part of the 44th Annual Education Leadership Summer Conference at the Indiana University School of Education this week.
Panels including state legislators, a representative of the Indiana Governor's office, education law professors, attorneys, and research experts will take place from 3:30-6 p.m. on Thursday, June 23 at the Wright Education Building in Bloomington. No registration is required for the panel discussions, which will be held in the auditorium of the Wright Building.
Recent changes in Indiana education policy and how schools should handle emerging legal issues is the focus of public panel discussions at the IU School of Education.
The panels are part of the two day leadership conference sponsored by the IU School Administrators Association, the IU School of Education, and the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy (CEEP) with support from the Midwest Regional Education Laboratory -- a U.S. Department of Education institute that connects educational systems with education research and related technical assistance activities.
"Educators in K-12 education in Indiana have not witnessed comprehensive education reform like this since the "A Schools" agenda passed in 1987 by then Gov. Robert Orr and State Superintendent H. Dean Evans," said Terry Spradlin, director for education policy at CEEP. "The new laws to be discussed at the conference will have far-reaching and a long-lasting impact on public education and stakeholders need to be in tune with these changes."
The first panel discussion, beginning at 3:30 p.m., focuses on Indiana education policy and is titled "How will the 2011 session of the Indiana General Assembly change the future of K-12 education?" Panelists include Rep. Robert Behning, R-Indianapolis, and chair of the House Education Committee; Todd Bess, associate executive director of the Indiana Association of School Principals; Rep. Terry Goodin, D-Austin; Scott Jenkins, senior policy director for education in the Indiana Governor's office; Sen. Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn; and Sen. Vi Simpson, D-Ellettsville.
At 5 p.m., education law is the topic for the panel "Emerging Legal Issues within Indiana and the Nation." Panelists include IU School of Education faculty members who are school law scholars -- Martha McCarthy, Chancellor's Professor of educational leadership and policy studies (ELPS), and Suzanne Eckes, associate professor in ELPS. Other panelists are: Janet Decker, assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati where she researches special education law; Allison Fetter-Harrott, assistant professor at Franklin College where she has researched school legal issues and dealt with them as a practicing attorney; Michelle Gough, legal and policy specialist with the Indiana Department of Education; and Emily Richardson, associate instructor with the IU School of Education and a former grade school teacher who now teaches education law and ethics at IU.
"We'll speak briefly about some of the legal issues that could arise with the state's collective bargaining laws, the new voucher plan, and some of the other issues that are happening in Indiana," said Eckes. "Then we'll move into other important emerging issues that we get a lot of calls about from superintendents, principals, and teachers."
Eckes added that student Internet speech is a likely topic as well as emerging issues surrounding harassment of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students.
The larger conference will continue on Friday, featuring sessions on preventing dropouts in high school and preparing students for college and the workforce. Keynote speaker Nicole Farmer Hurd from the National High School Center will speak on preventing high school drop outs and high school reform. Lisa Shimmel, policy analyst at the American Institutes for Research, will present the session "Implementing Effective Dropout Prevention Practice." Eric Ban, principal at Crown Point High School, will present "All Kids Prepared for College and the Workplace -- Welcome to the Indiana College Acceleration Network!"
The 44th annual conference is a tradition of the IU School Administrators Association, which has long held the event as a time for school leaders to meet and discuss best practices. The IU School Administrators Association is an organization of past Indiana University educational leadership graduates from around the country who continue to work to bring support and recognition to current and future school leaders.
The Thursday panel discussions will also be available streaming online. You can view the 3:30 p.m. policy panel live at http://education.indiana.edu/PolicyPanelLive; after Thursday it will be archived at http://education.indiana.edu/PolicyPanelArchive.

Cloggs.co.uk Announced as Best Etailer of the Year 2011.
Birmingham, UK (PRWEB) May 14, 2011
Success was had by many at the Drapers Footwear Awards last night, but none were more deserving than the online footwear etailer Cloggs.co.uk. Competing against large brand names such as Jimmy Choo and Clarks, the relatively small independent Cloggs.co.uk has proven that it is a force to be reckoned with.
Cloggs.co.uk has had a very successful 2011 so far and this award has shown that their success has been recognised by key players in the industry. The etailer's main successes have come from their ability to spot key trends in the footwear industry. The toning brand FitFlop is a perfect example of this, with thousands of customers coming to the Cloggs website each day to purchase these popular footwear items.
The FitFlop brand even claimed the coveted Best Brand of the Year award for its ever expanding range of toning styles, such as the FitFlop Supertone and FitFlop Oasis
Matt Jeans, E-Commerce Manager of Cloggs.co.uk, said "We're honoured to have won this award, we were competing against some major brand names but it's clear our strong customer focus has enabled us to become one of the best etailers on the internet." Matt went on to say that the Cloggs team have made several changes to their website in the past month, all of which were carefully tested in order to make sure they gave the customer the best experience whilst shopping their site.
Matt was also keen to mention that he felt Cloggs.co.uk's strong use of social media to build a community surrounding the Cloggs brand and with over 10,000 fans on Facebook, a twitter follower base that is ever growing and a strong presence on Youtube, it's hard to argue this won't have added to the success of the Cloggs.co.uk brand.
The Drapers' Footwear Awards is an annual event hosted by the driving force behind the popular fashion magazine Drapers. There were several awards presented during the event, including a Lifetime Achievement award which went to the retired Clarks Chief Executive Peter Bolliger.
Jessica Brown, Executive Editor of Drapers said "The standard of this year's winner's has been phenomenal and Drapers is very proud to be able to celebrate some outstanding innovations in the footwear sector over the last 12 months." It will be interesting to see what the next 12 months bring to this ever competitive industry.

Varsity Media Announces $600,000 Grant With National Science Foundation NSF.
Varsity Media Group Acquisition Corp, a wholly owned subsidiary of Varsity Media Group Inc, announced that Dr. Lee McKnight, Co-Founder of Wireless Grids Corporation has been awarded along with Syracuse University (Lead) and Virginia Tech (Co-Awardee) a National Science Foundation (NSF) two year grant totaling $600,000.00 for the Wireless Grid Testbed Initiative (WiGiT). This initiative will initially include faculty and students from Syracuse University and Virginia Tech, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Tufts University and Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST), Lisbon, Portugal, with plans to include other world leading academic institutions. Dr. Lee McKnight, will be the Principal Investigator of the Initiative along with Dr. Tamal Bose and will include leading researchers in wireless, grid and entrepreneurship fields. Participants and partners at the inception of the project, in addition to the academic institutions, include private sector organizations and corporate partners such as Clear Channel Radio; Qualcomm, Syracuse Research Corporation (SRC); SenSyr LLC; Center for Advanced Engineering & Research, Inc. (CAER); MOD-ECO; and Wireless Grids Corporation (WGC). Governmental and intergovernmental organizations involved in the Testbed project include: Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC) Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Portugal; and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Paris, France.
"The expansive collaboration driving this project is truly breathtaking," said Syracuse University Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor. "It transcends disciplines, spans institutions, and crosses sectors--as well as oceans--to bring the best minds together to create game-changing technologies whose impact will be felt worldwide. Catalyzing creativity and innovation in this way is exactly what we aim to do at Syracuse University and we're thrilled that Lee McKnight is spearheading this project." "This NSF funding bears testimony to the exciting, forward-looking research that will be conducted by a stellar team who will be investigating the issues regarding standards that must be addressed to enable the bridging between wireless grids and cloud computing," said iSchool Dean Elizabeth D. Liddy. "Our faculty and students thrive on conducting research on leading-edge technologies and software. We see great potential in the contributions WiGiT can make to society."
The WiGiT will assist in refining transformative technologies to create markets, bridge the gap between wireless network middleware and grid application layers and accelerate commercialization and adoption of new products and services. WiGiT serves industry needs for intra-system, or crossover work bridging the world of grid or cloud computing and wireless Internet, by contributing to open standards and application programming interfaces for wireless grids. The main goal is to evaluate specifications for possible industry standards in order to scale and integrate the transformative innovation of wireless grids developed in a prior PPFR, with specifications and protocols developed in the NSFI/UCRC Wireless Internet Center for Advanced Technology (WiCAT), meshed with technologies and ideas from students, faculty and companies worldwide. WiGiT will determine the extent to which wireless grid computing may augment communication networks and standards such as the Internet, Bluetooth, WiFi, WiMax and mobile WiMax for data transmission communication, collaboration, research, and for commercial purposes. WiGiT will test the VMG proprietary "edgeware" software that resides beyond the cloud, across edge networks devices, both wired and wireless.

MIDLER CROSSING WORK LIKELY TO ADVANCE IN JULY.(Business)(Column)
Byline: BOB NIEDT RETAIL NOTEBOOK
Construction at Midler Crossing, the new retail development in Syracuse, has been on hold for several weeks.
But activity at the $30 million shopping center complex will pick up in July as Pioneer Cos. gets past "expected environmental issues," said Jed Schneider, project manager.
"The project has been in the design stages for some time, and we got through the demolition," said Schneider. "To no one's surprise, some environmental work needed to be done. You should see some activity there next month."
Coming to the center at Midler Road next to Interstate 690 is a 170,000-square-foot Lowe's home improvement superstore. Also in the complex is a State Employees Federal Credit Union building.
No other tenants have been announced, although the develop, which is based in Syracuse, has room for 33,000 square feet of retail space and a sit-down restaurant.
Pioneer is building Midler Center atop an industrial wasteland that has high visibility and high traffic volumes whizzing by, sandwiched between I-690 and Erie Boulevard East.
It will house Onondaga County's third Lowe's store. The first opened in Cicero a year ago. The second opened in Camillus earlier this year.
When announced in November, Pioneer said construction on the project would begin in the spring.
But after demolition of the former Prosperity Co. building - a fire gave the demolition a head start - and some site work, things ground to a halt over the past few weeks.
Going in, Pioneer admitted there would be some challenges. Michael P. Falcone, Pioneer's chief executive officer, said the 28-acre site was "an environmentally challenged industrial eyesore" that would be turned into a "revenue-producing retail complex."
Filling orders
Impulsively heading to Armory Square's The Hot Shoppe at 311 S. Clinton St. one day a couple of weeks ago, I was shut out.
Door: Locked.
Check time: 3ish.
Reaction: Whuh?
Flustered, I did what any ordinary person would do these days: I got on the Internet, to The Hot Shoppe's Web site (www.thehotshop.com ).
Firing off an e-mail that accidentally turned into multiple e-mails (sorry, Hot Shoppe), I heard back from Allen Rossino, who co-owns The Hot Shoppe with his wife, Dale.
Turns out they had to shut the doors early because they were so busy preparing packages.
"The surge in business on the Internet has been overwhelming," said Al. "There have been twice as many orders than we usually get. Lately, it's been hard to honor our commitment to posted store hours because of the Internet business."
Ninety percent of The Hot Shoppe's business is online these days, said Al.
"The rest is whatever walk-in business we see in Armory Square, and that usually comes from 30 miles and beyond," said Al.
The Hot Shoppe, online and bricks-and-mortar, offers thousands of hot sauces, salsas, cooking marinades and sauces, seasonings, condiments, jams snacks and more.
It's been in the biz since 1991, a veteran of Armory Square. Those of us with a taste for things fiery are hoping they'll keep at it.
It's been tough for the store, said Al, with street closures for festivals almost weekly.
"When Clinton Street is closed for any reason, our walk-in business plummets," said Al.

CULTURE : Sith sense; Alison Jones chats to the director and stars of Revenge of the Sith.(Features)
Byline: Alison Jones
George Lucas seems to be remarkably unmoved by the fact that he has broken the hearts of millions of near-middle aged men and women all over the world.
Today's release of Revenge of the Sith marks the end of an epic journey started a long time ago (1977 to be exact) in a galaxy far far away. After this he will never make, despite oft repeated fan-boy rumours that it is meant to be a story of nine, not six parts, another Star Wars film.
The sense of loss to those vast numbers of people whose formative years were spent embracing all things Star Warsian (the three original films, the books. the spoofs, the spin off merchandise) is incalculable.
George is more sanguine about things: 'To me it is more like when your kids go off to college. They still come back when they need money and they'll be there for holidays. 'There will be a TV series, two of them actually. I am not really involved in them. One is an animated series and one is a live action series and they have got minor characters in that.
'I am going to go off and do my thing the world is going to go off and do theirs. The comic books and videos and novels are out there. It is sort of going to have a life of its own.'
For anyone who has spent the last 30 years with their head in a bucket, the story began with Star Wars in which naive farm boy Luke Skywalker set off the rescue a Princess from the clutches of an evil galactic Emperor.
He was aided by a roguish pilot and the last remaining member of an ancient band of elite warriors known as the Jedi.
Through Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi Luke and friends fought and overthrew the Emperor. Luke also discovered the Princess was the twin he never knew he had and their father was the Emperor's right hand villain, Darth Vader Sixteen years later George decided to go back to the story and reveal exactly how Vader went to the bad.
'Star Wars was intended to be one movie. It was designed to be the tragedy of Darth Vader. It starts with this monster coming through the door throwing everybody around. Halfway through the movie you realise the villain of the piece is actually a man and the hero is his son and in the end the villain turns into the hero inspired by his son.
'When I broke it up I didn't have the money to do what would have been a five hour movie. The icon of Darth Vader kind of took over and his tragedy got diminished.'
The back story and biography of the characters and an exposition of how the Empire came to be still existed but, technically, was too difficult to film.
However, giant leaps in technology meant that, by the end of the 90s, Lucas could make the films how he visualised them. That he could create entire planets and turn a little green muppet (Jedi master Yoda) into a badass fighter.
'I had really stopped making movies so I could raise my kids and I did that for 15 years. When they were old enough I said 'OK I am going to go off and direct now. Am I going to do these avant garde movies that I had intended to do or do I take one last shot at Star Wars and tell the back story so the tragedy becomes more apparent?
'I realised if I didn't do it then, I was 50, I would probably never get around to it.'
Advances in computer graphics have also allowed him to go back and tinker with the originals, as the special effects he used then never lived up to his high expectations.
'The first film I did was really not finished. I didn't have the money, the time or the technology. I was really disappointed, really sad and it bothers me to watch it and to a minor degree the next two films.
'I did those films in a special edition to finish them off the way I meant them to be, if nothing else because I am stubborn, dogmatic and persistent.'
Sadly, George feels that the kind of event movie he has spent hundreds of millions of dollars making may have had its day. Destroyed by piracy which eats into the profits the films can make.
'Piracy is definitely the single biggest threat to the industry, I am glad I am getting out when I can because it is going to get insane in the next few years.
'If it wasn't for DVD there would be no theatrical film industry and as DVD gets whittled away through piracy there won't be any income so we are going to to see smaller and smaller releases.
'I think people will always want the theatrical experience just like they go to the opera or the ballet, but I have a feeling films will be released on the internet and in theatres at exactly the same time

Mocavo.com Launches as World's Largest Free Genealogy Search Engine.
Industry breakthrough provides instant search results for billions of names, dates and places worldwide
BOULDER, Colo. -- Mocavo.com[TM] (http://www.mocavo.com), a free search engine geared toward genealogists and people interested in learning more about their family history, launches today. Mocavo.com enables the search of more than 50 billion words - including billions of names, dates and places, all within fractions of a second. Mocavo.com fills an important industry need by providing the first large-scale, free search engine for family history research. Coupled with the speed and accuracy by which search results are produced, Mocavo.com represents a major technological breakthrough within the genealogy world.
Mocavo.com has already been met with critical acclaim by several industry experts. Dick Eastman, writer of Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and a top blogger in the field, wrote, "All my future genealogy searches will start on Mocavo.com. I've been using the site for a while during its testing and have been very impressed. I suspect you will always have better luck searching for your own surnames of interest on Mocavo.com than on any other search engine."
Randy Seaver, writer of the popular Genea-Musings blog, said, "Mocavo.com promises to be a genealogist's dream - a search engine focused on free online genealogy resources." Mr. Eastman's and Mr. Seaver's full reviews can be found at http://www.eogn.com and http://www.geneamusings.com, respectively.
Starting today, the general public can use Mocavo.com for free. Visitors to www.mocavo.com are simply required to type in the names of interest and click on Search. All related results from industry sources such as genealogy message boards, family trees, state and local historical societies, the Library of Congress, National Archives, Ellis Island, Find A Grave, the Internet Archive, various U.S. state archives, and many tens of thousands of genealogy sites built by individuals will be displayed. Similar to other search engines, Mocavo.com honors site owners by linking directly to their content.
Cliff Shaw, founder and CEO of Mocavo Inc., identifies the current trouble for genealogists and the solution that Mocavo.com provides, "Genealogy has always had the problem of information and potential clues being spread across thousands of disparate web sites and sources. Imagine a world where you have all of the Web's free genealogy content at your fingertips within seconds. That is Mocavo.com."
"Mocavo.com has the capacity to index every single piece of free genealogy content found anywhere on the web, and will be growing by leaps and bounds in the coming months," said Mr. Shaw. "We expect Mocavo.com to shortly offer all of the web's free genealogy information, searchable and accessible to all - something that has never been done before. It's set to become the go-to search engine for every family history enthusiast."
Mocavo Inc. is the brainchild of Cliff Shaw. Mr. Shaw is well known in the industry, having created four successful companies and many innovative technologies, including Smart Matching[TM], the most successful ancestor-matching algorithm. He created GenForum 14 years ago and it quickly grew to become the number one community for genealogists (now owned by Ancestry.com[R] (NASDAQ:ACOM)). In the early 2000's, Mr. Shaw launched GenCircles and Family Tree Legends, becoming the number two family tree publishing site and number two family tree software package respectively (both are now owned by MyHeritage.com). More recently, Mr. Shaw launched the well-received BackupMyTree.com, the industry's only automatic tree backup solution.
