Vic: Port Phillip welcomes injecting centre
Melbourne's Port Phillip Council has welcomed a safe injecting centre for St Kilda.
Port Phillip, one of five councils selected for the trial rooms, says 32 people died
of heroin overdoses in the municipality between June 1998 and July 1999.
Port Phillip mayor JULIAN HILL says governments at all levels must do what they can
to protect and save lives.
Cr HILL says traders and the broader community will also benefit if the number of people
injecting in streets, lanes and front yards is reduced.
He says the council has consulted with residents and they generally support its harm
minimisation approach.
