NSW: Refugee Action Collective supports scaling down of Woomera

A national refugee advocacy group says scaling down the Woomera Detention Centre isa step forward -- but it doesn't address the main problem of detaining asylum seekers.

The Refugee Action Collective says it supports the announcement that the centre, inSouth Australia, will be scaled down and the Curtin centre in Western Australia's farnorth will be mothballed.

Some asylum seekers will instead be housed at the new Baxter Immigration Receptionand Processing Centre in South Australia, opening later this year.

Action Collective spokesman NATASHA VERCO says it's a step forward in the context ofa very regressive policy.

She says the conditions at the Baxter centre are likely be better than the horrors of Woomera.

But she says the the major horror -- indefinite detention -- remains.
