Vic: Fire threatens homes in Gippsland

MELBOURNE, April 22 AAP - A bushfire in eastern Victoria is threatening six homes as
firefighters battle the blaze in difficult terrain.

The fire started about 2pm (AEST) at Churchill in Gippsland and is threatening homes
in the Jumbuck Estate.

John Tindall from the Country Fire Authority said 14 fire trucks and one aircraft were
battling the 24 hectare blaze and another three aircraft were on the way.

"The last we heard was that there were half a dozen houses coming under threat with
smoke and embers in the area," he said.

Mr Tindall said the bush and scrub fire was in an area of steep and rocky terrain.

"It will make it quite difficult," he said.

The houses were on the top of an escarpment, which could also increase the risk as
fire ran up hills "faster and hotter", he said.

Mr Tindall said the fire was burning towards the south, driven by a gentle northerly wind.
